RE: Has the Internet ruined any favorite boondocking spots?

Very good.The cove to the south does have a smaller 25'waterfall.This is where we leave the RV and boondock.Its only 9 miles from the pavement.The cove directly north is where the 100' waterfall is.3/8s of a mile up that creek.Plainly defined by what looks like a large white dot in the woods.Never could figure a way to get the RV to the island,hence the word "Camp"on it.I do confess the thought has crossed my mind more than once.I dont think the poontoons on the boat would support the 10000 pounds.
As I said,Im not greedy.If you want it bad enough and can manage the mountain drive,it,s there.

RE: Cash for gold??????

There is a formula you can use to actually find out exatly how much gold you have.Somehow you weigh it regular then you submerse it in water and weigh it.The two diffarent weights go into an equation and tell you exactly how much gold you have as opposed to other pource metals under the gold.A decent jeweler or some research would come up with the correct method.
As for weather I'd trust the "mail your gold in" deals,NO absolutly not.

RE: Has the Internet ruined any favorite boondocking spots?

Im not greedy.Here I'll give you the spot and show you what it looks like.http://terraserver-usa.com/image.aspx?T=1&S=14&Z=17&X=98&Y=1218&W=1&qs=Hwy+107%7cIndian+Place%7cNorth+Carolina%7c&Addr=SR-107%2c+Tuckasegee%2c+NC+28783&ALon=-83.1254171&ALat=35.2480108 Three water falls drop into this lake.The 100 footer can be seen from the Island we sometimes camp on.Now all you have to do is search 30 miles of shoreline and travel the roads I do to find me.GOOD LUCK WITH THAT.

RE: My stealth trailer project.

One thing I saw a friend do and I thought was a great idea.He put two bunks inside his trailer.Both bunks are actually hinged so he can fold them upward to get them out of the way to haul his 4 wheeler.But the top bunk he actually attached the mattress to the plywood by useing some 1" wide strips of 3/8" plywood.Reason is the top bunk is actually hinged to swing both ways.He unhooks two chains that hold it in place for sleeping and lets it down.Now he has a back to a type of couch using the bottom bunk as the seat to the couch.
Another idea he used was he found a colored black square tank and mounted it to the top of his trailer.Ran a hose down thru a small hole in the roof.Now he has running water inside.The black tank actually heats the water to an extent.He actually went a little extravagant and mounted a small stainless steel sink inside and ran the water line to a faucet in the sink.Draining the sink directly to the ground thru a pipe thru the floor.

RE: remodeling your rv forum

Here's A Tip for remodelers. If you'd like to add new cabinet doors in your rig that match the ones that came in it, instead of trying to match them at a home improvement store or wait for six weeks for them to be made and delivered, or get them from the rv manufacturer, try local cabinet shops. I've had two sets of doors made for our rig. One set in Texas and one set in Missouri. They were both made and delivered to me within two days after ordering. Very reasonably priced, around 50-60 bucks a pair. Just make a couple of calls first to see if they have time to tackle a small job. Both shops asked me to bring them a picture of the existing doors so they could match the profile of the doors. I removed a fireplace for storage, added one set of doors there and I removed the gas oven to have more pantry room and added a set there. No regrets and they look great. DaveThats funny.I removed the oven also.Whos gonna bake anything on the road?In its place I mounted the Micro Wave.Saw an old Winnobago along the road they were scraping for parts.Bought the big overhead cabinet door and mounted it upside down in front of the micro wave using two lenths of small chain as a stop.I took the door apart and added extra glue and a few brad nails fro reinforcement.Now when I open the cabinet door downward I have a type of table to use when using the micro wave.

RE: What is the main obstacle to swivel cab seats?

We bought/ordered a new 1988 Mallard/Ford E-350. I ordered it with swivel captain seats, what a waste, like said no room to swivel.
DustyMy 88 E-350 passenger seat swivels with penty of room if you put it forward all the way before swiveling.Its more comfortable than the other seats in the back of the Winni.The drivers seat though?Well!!!&%$$%$&*(*thing anyway.

RE: Would you pay?

While camping alone I backed in and hit a PVC water spicot at the campground.After swallowing my pride a little,(I drive a truck for a living)I went to the campground owner to tell him.After questioning my plumbing experiance.His reply was"$50 if I fix it and $5 if you fix it to cover parts".I fixed the spicot myself and he did'nt charge me a thing.
Lack of responability is alot of whats wrong with this country today.

RE: NASCAR disappointment at Darlington

To all those griping about the stuck up drivers and money munching series called Nascar.Me and my family used to watch Nascar religously and went to a few races.When we realised how fans were treated like lower class most of the time we decided to make a change.We started traveling to National Series dirt track events.You get the same experiances at these events as you do at Nascar.Theres allways a neighbor with his hand out to shake and meet you.Theres usually ten times better racing and more passing.For the younger crowd(Your as young as you feel.I like a little partying myself sometimes.)theres allways a party going on.Drivers are much more approchable.In 8 years we were never turned down for an autograph.
Just a quick story;A couple years ago at East Bay Winter Nationals,my wife had a deck of driver cards.She asked a driver called Scott James for his Autograph.Afterwords she knew one of the cards belonged to the pit next to him and asked him to point out that driver.He did so then asked to see the cards.He spent nearly an hour walking around with my wife in the pits and pointing out drivers so she could get autographs.He made fans for life in this family.
Give it a try sometime.I'll bet you wont be disappointed.
Heres a list of Santioning bodies for Dirt Latemodel racing.This is what we watch.http://www.chasinracin.com/sanctions/index.php?action=2&vtype_0=Dirt_Late_Model If you follow the link you can find other series like Big Block Modifieds or Winged Sprints.We watch Late Models because they use the same engines as nascar but on dirt.

RE: Extreme Makeover: Home Edition Forclosure

I had the displeasure of working on one of these houses the other day.I have been in the costruction trade for over 20 years now.In my opinion,this practice of building is dangerous and shoddy.There setting such a quick pace that workers are crawling all over each other.I watched as many workers were working near and around equipment being used to dig footers.Constantly hearing the words "HOA!!" as equipment nearly ran into each other or a worker near by.I saw many instants that wouldnt fly on any other professionally done job.Lets face it.If you were having a house built,would you want a builder to "Throw up" a house for you in record time?The speed at witch the places are being built demand shortcuts and shoddy workmanship be done.Example;Concrete codes require a certain curing time before building on it to aquire strenth.They were laying block on it 2 hours after it was placed.Granted the outer and top edges of the concrete was hard.But the core of that concrete footer was still soft.
To me this practice of home building is a joke and has no place in the construction world.Theres codes to pass to assure quality home building.Just because theres cameras rolling is no reason to thwart these codes.All contractors in the world would like to "Throw up" houses like that everyday,lets face it "time is money in construction."But could you immagine the outcry about quality or lack there of.

RE: Best place to buy new cushion covers for my class c

Im in the same boat.Mine are OK but old.I have been looking for over a year and still cant find any.I thought this was really odd but I even went to Winn.dealership and they said they dont sell replacements.Heres something else that makes me go Hmmm.Why is the bed 14"inches shorter than the birth.I can understand maybe 4"inches for clearance of the window curtains.But when your 6'2" tall,that extra 10" inches would have been nice.
Might try Goggle RV Junk Yards.Theres a few in my state but I havnt got around to going to one.Ill bet they have some newer rigs there that somebody didnt take care of in one way or another.

RE: Help with finding a solid "Older" Class C??

Engine/Drivetrain;Start under hood.
Check air and oil filter to see if its new looking.If theres a date and milage wrote on it the user usually took care of his stuff.Obviously pull dipsticks and check that it has antifreeze in it.
Check that battery is up to date with no coroded posts.
Check that plug wires are not brittle or looking very old.
Check carburator to see if all vacuam lines are hooked up and not just capped off(This may require you to remove interior engine cover).
Check the drive belts are new and not cracked and all are in place.
Look for leaks every where(ie;Heads/valvepan covers,Brake Master Cylander,Power Steering Pump,Water Pump).
Moving on to under the vehicle;
Physcally get under vehicle and check the bottom of the engine/transmission for fresh oil leaking.
You can usually see the inside,or atleast part of the Brake rotors at this point.Check that there smooth and not scored in any way.Surface rust on them dont mean much as they'll develop that overnight in a real humid enviroment.
Look at all grease zerks.If theres grease on them this is a good sign that the vehicle was taken good care of.
Check Tie Rod Ends and Steering Linkage for tightness(A good stout shake will do,there should be no wiggle to them}Also check that rubber grommets on the ends are not cracked or tore.
Check the insides of the tires at this point also for dry rought cracks or rubbing marks.
From here on back you should be visually checking the floor of coach for rust.Also loose wires,rubber lines for dry rought.
Moving back to Drive Shaft,check that theres grease on the zerks to the universals.Also wiggle the driveshaft pretty stout,there should be no play.Check that Carrier bearing has grease and the grommets are not cracked or tore.Again wiggle Drive Shaft at both sides of Carrier Bearing.
Moving to the rear end.Check that there no oils at all leaking.
At this point you should also be checking the Brake Drums/Rotors for scoring or grooves.
Also check rear tires for dry rought and rubbing/wearing marks.Check around inner fender wells for damage do to blowouts.
Then check the Black and Grey water tanks for wear or obvious patches/fixes.Also check the valves to those tanks at this time.
Walk around check;
Check that all lights work.Turn,Brake,Running,Parking,Clearance,Headlights.
Check outside of tires and rims for dry rought cracks or leaking wheel seals.
Check Spare tire and jacks.
While walking around outside allways be checking the siding of the vehicle for obvious things like dents or holes and investigate those things.
The not so obvious are water damage,look down the side of the camper for bubbles or waves in the siding.
Check that window seals are in good shape.
At the cab look for rust of any kind.Knock on the Rocker panels and bottoms of doors and around fenders with your knucles.If its a dull thud,bondo has been used.
Interior Coach area;
Smell it!A musty smell is a dead give away of leaking.
Push on the walls around the windows,doors,skylights/cieling vents,and air conditioner.Pay special attention at the bottom corners.Any softness indicates water leaking.
Any painted over spots or discolored wall paneling are usually another giveaway of leakage.
Check carpet around toilet and shower for discoloring/musty smell.Pull on carpet checking for dry rought.Remember around toilet.As far as smell,IT IS A TOILET.
Check that toilet is holding a small amount of water.
Open upper cabinets.Check upper corners of walls for discoloring and soft spots.Remember,theres rarely a reason for anyone to paint the inside of a cabinet.There covering something up.
Open cabinets under sinks.Check for delamination of any kind or water damage.
Check overhead bunk thoroughly for leaks.Push on walls and look under mattress.
Check that all lights are working on battery.
Check that range hood works on battery.
Usually at this point check the Meters for LP,Battery,Fresh water,Black/Grey tank,levels.Make sure they work.
Check the Carbon Monoxide Detector,LP Gas Detector to see that its working.
Check for smoke alarm.
Check that refrigerator works on battery.
Check the invertor,if equiped,that it works.
Check that water pump works on battery.You can usually here it in back closet or under bed.
Check that stove and refrigerator works on gas now.
Turn house heater on to see if it works.
Turn hot water heater on to see that it works.DO NOT LEAVE IT ON LONG!!!It may not have water in it.
Turn on Generator.After short warm up,recheck all the above to see that they work on AC current.
Check that Air Conditioner Works and cools.May take a few minutes.
Now the Cab;
Start the vehicle and check that brakes work and are not spongy.
Leave the vehicle run awhile to check that gauges come up to working order.Pay close attention to oil pressure and water temp.
Check that all switches work.
Pay special attention where cab roof hooks to over head bunk for water damage.
Shut off vehcle and go to generator compartment.Basically check like you checked motor for coach.Leaks,Oil/Air Filter.Start engine externally and check that hour meter is working.
Now check house batteries.Are they up to date?Connections not corroded.Pull the tops off and check that all cells are full.
The roof;
Be sure theres no patches or repairs.If there are make sure they look professionally done.
Look for bubbles in roofing material.
Pay special attention to seams at overhead bunk.
Check the air conditioner shroud is not cracked.
Driving it;
Check for pulling to one side.This could mean allighnment is bad.
Be sure theres no shaking in steering wheel.
Recheck braking power.
Allways keep paying attention to engine gauges.
I probably forgot some things.Im a pretty good shadetree mechanic but I had no RV experiance when I bought mine.By thinking ahead and following these procedures I think I did good buying mine.After two years I,ve had very little problems.
If any of these are wrong be sure to ask questions.By questioning you can weed out the truth and save some money by not buying junk or getting the price lowered.Try to take a mechanic with you if your not mechanically inclined or atleast take it to a rv service place and get them to go through it.This looks like a big list but it probably took longer for me to one fingur type this than it will for you to actually check them.
Hope this helps,and best of luck.

RE: Gold Panning

You may be surprised at how much you can find.With a little research in a library you can find old claims that were given up on in the 50s do to gold being regulated to $25 an ounce.In the 70s gold was deregulated and the price is now near $1000 an ounce.With a little research you might really be surprised at how many people are actually making a living from it.It can be a major investment in the beginning if you really want to find gold thats worth your while but the investment could actually be paid back in little time.The main thing is serious research,hard work,and time investigating possabilities.My family does it as a family thing.We dont get rich off it but for the time we spend at it we do allright.The main thing is it brought us closer together as a family.
We have found 1.2 ounces in a days time.Unusual but can be done.

RE: Gas Mileage????

SLOW DOWN!!!Im a lead foot and its hard for me to drive slow.Been driving the 88 Minnie at 65 and 70 for the past year or so.Getting around 210 mile to the tank full.Last two trips I took I went with a fellow camper who refused to go over 55.I couldnt believe the fillups.I was going 200 mile on a little over half tanks for a change.Still havnt worked out the milage yet but at 9-10 mile at 65 versus about 15-16 mile at 55 you can bet my lead footin days are over in the Minnie.

RE: Taking my first trip in 5 days! HELP!

When we were Van camping we used a solar shower.Since we were near very clean and clear mountain streams I worried about dumping the shower water.I went to Home Depot and bought a large plastic masonry tub.It is big enough to stand in and can hold up to three showers.After use just dump into a 5 gallon bucket and put the lid on it.I then would dump it on the dirt road on the way out when I was far enough from the streams.
As far as packing and food goes,as long as your worried about it you'll never have a problem.Like us you'll allways take to much.The biggest problem in the confined space is finding a place to put stuff so your not allways moving it.Having to move stuff to lay down after a long day gets tiedious.

RE: Leveling Blocks for Dual wheels - NEED ANSWER QUICK

Your quick fix will work for the weekend and a little longer.But eventually the pine you bought will splinter and break apart.Keep your eyes open around resadential construction sites in your area.Try to find some scrap Micro-Lam header boards(Man made boards they put over doors and windows for strength).Micro-Lam is basically like partical board but with the wood intertwined,glued and compressed,its much stronger than typical pine.Ive had a set I made for over a year now and still show no sighns of wear or swelling.
